Reminders in Recovery

“I know myself — I’ll be all fired up at first, but eventually I slip back into my usual routine. Reminders help me keep that fire going a little longer.”

Reminders in Recovery

💍 “Recovery isn’t about what you know — it’s about what you do.”—but it doesn’t always have to be complicated or overwhelming. Sometimes the smallest and simplest actions make the biggest difference. A few minutes each morning can set the tone for the whole day.

Our Reminders in Recovery morning Zoom meeting is designed to help us stay consistent with daily practices like reading from Twenty-Four Hours a Day by Hazelden Publishing.

You can get a digital copy of Twenty-Four Hours a Day by Hazelden Publishing- for Apple of for Android

Physical copies can be obtained at some of the Calgary AA meetings like Daily Reflections at Scarboro United Church or Calgary AA Central Office

Read Today’s Thought for the Day in the first person. Change “we” to I and “our” to my, etc. Read out loud if you find it helpful. Ask for help if needed.

Meditation for the Day
Read the Meditation for the Day. Change the word God if needed to a more personal term that represents your own beliefs.

For example, read it as Good Orderly Direction or substitute God for the word Love.

If it suits your beliefs then use more formal terms like Jesus, Allah, Jehovah, Mohamed or Buddha or use informal spiritual names like Mother Nature, Grandfather (or mother) etc.

Prayer for the Day
A prayer is hope, try changing the word pray or prayer for the word hope. Read it as “I hope…”

Why We Do This

Effort – Recovery asks for effort, but the effort can be simple: five minutes of reading and connection is enough to keep us on track.

Reminders – Without reminders, it’s easy to drift away from the commitments we’ve made. This practice helps keep the fire alive longer.

Community – Fellowship is a power greater than ourselves. Just like running clubs help runners stay motivated, community support helps us succeed in recovery.

A Simple Commitment

Many of us have found that committing to reading Twenty-Four Hours a Day every morning for the first two years of recovery creates a strong foundation. It’s a little effort that makes a big difference—day after day.
